Course: World History / Historical Quotes: The Rest of the Story 
In this activity you'll find out what goes on behind the scenes in some of modern history's most famous quotations.

ActivityHistorical Quotes: The Rest of the Story TITLE
InstructionsIn groups of three, you and your partners will learn more about a famous quotation from history. 
1. Get a copy of a historical quote from your teacher. 
2. First focus on the TEXT: What do the actual words mean? Are there any words that you need to define? Are there names that you don't know?
3. Next, focus on the CONTEXT: What was going on in history during the time period that the quotation was created? You and your partners will need to conduct a basic search (hint->) to find out what was happening at the time of the quote and why it was spoken.
4. Finally, using your search results, or finding more information if necessary, find out about the SUBTEXT, including: 
a) Who was the Author (Speaker) and what do we know about that person? 
b) What was the intended Audience -- for whom was the source created? 
c) What was the Reason - Why was the source created when it was?

Hint: When searching for a phrase, include a few of its more unique words inside quotation marks in your search box.

Summative Assessment WHAT TO DO WHEN FINISHED WITH TODAY'S ACTIVITIES 
ExtensionChoose a modern quotation that has become part of our modern life (one that has gone "viral") and complete investigate the TEXT / CONTEXT / SUBTEXT of that quote. Complete another worksheet, Prezi, or make a short presentation to the class of your findings.

"Hiking the Appalachian Trail."
