Activity
InstructionsFocus on the Ideas and Art of the Renaissance
On Friday, you and a few others worked on a slide show that dealt with some of the features of the Renaissance. Included in that was a brief look at the renaissance outside of Italy. Today, you'll be digging even deeper into that area with an online assignment. You may find it useful to work with a partner, and to discuss your findings as you go. You may wish to download a single template, then share it between you if you like. 
Here's how:

Go to Google Docs and create a new document from a template called Renaissance Comparison. 
Use the resources there to find out what the Italian and Renaissance had in common, and how they were different.

Your HOMEWORK is to review and/or complete any (or all) of the following assignments from this assessment cycle:
1) Today's assignment (above)
2) Friday's assignment (your slide show)
3) Wednesday's assignment (your personal dictionary)
4) Tuesday's assignment (the Renaissance web byte)
4) Any missing, incomplete, or late homework assignments for this assessment cycle, see below. 

From last Monday: READ the assigned pages in the textbook (162-167) AS YOU READ, find answers to the following questions. (Page numbers are shown to help you locate answers, but you are expected to READ all pages assigned.)
  1. What factors made Italy such a good location for the renaissance to begin? (162)
  2. How did the cities of Milan, Venice, and Florence become powerful centers of culture in Italy? (You may want to create a three-column table to answer this question) (164)
  3. Who was Machiavelli, and what did his book suggest political leaders should do? (165)
  4. What were the important qualities of an ideal noble during the Renaissance? (166)
  5. How was the typical family organized during the Renaissance? (167)
From last Thursday
Read pages 171-174; Answer the questions below as you read. 
  1.  How did the use of the vernacular help writers like Dante, Chaucer and de Pizan spread their ideas to a wider audience? (171-172)
  2. How did humanist ideas shape the opportunities available to both men and women in renaissance education? (173)
  3.  What changes did Italian Renaissance artists bring to painting? (173)

From last Friday
Read the end of the chapter (page 175) to learn how the Italian Renaissance spread out across Europe. 
1) What were some of the more significant differences between the Northern Renaissance and the Italian Renaissance?
2) What caused those differences?
3) What advances did Northern Renaissance artists bring to the movement?

TOMORROW we start working on your summative assessment; you'll want to have all your materials ready to go by then. Get caught up tonight.
