You had homework last night: Today we start class with a QUIZ. Use your homework to complete the quiz as well as you can. You can check your scores afterward by checking your email.

 I will be able to explain how Japan and Korea dealt with foreigners while they tried to maintain control of their own territory. I will review sections from last night's homework with an eye toward identifying interaction with outsiders.I will create an outline that focuses on the sections that talk about relationships with outside groups that explains why leaders took the approaches they did. This is a formative assessment. I need to complete it carefully to provide material I will need later for my summative assessment. 
Standard: Economics 2.4 -- Understand the economic issues and problems that all societies face. 
Essential Question -- 

How do decisions about trade and isolation help or hurt a society in the long run? (Due Tuesday, March 26)

Japan and Korea, though very different cultures and with very different histories, share some common characteristics that might help you understand why they acted the way they did when faced with the question of interaction or isolation with outsiders. 

Today, you'll be creating a table of important events, decisions and actions that helped shape the history of these nations.
Here's what you need to do:
  1. Begin by opening your own, new, blank Google Doc. 
  2. Title it "Japan and Korea"
  3. At the top of the page, use the Table menu on the menubar to Insert a Table with 4 columns and 1 rows (4 x 1)
  4. Use the first row as your title row; type the following titles in each cell
    1. Passage
    2. Key terms
    3. Decision
    4. Impact
  5. While in the last cell on the first row (called "Impact") press the Tab key; this will create a new row.
  6. In the first cell of the second row (under "Passage"), type or copy the following: "As the three great commanders...new weapons" (284-285)
  7. Create a new row, and in the first cell of the third row, type or copy the following: "The first Jesuit missionary... .... Christians were persecuted" (286)
  8. Create another row, and in the first cell of this row, type or copy the following: "European merchants were the next... .... two to three months" (286)
  9. Create one more row, and in the first cell of this row, type or copy the following: "Japanese art was enriched.... .... ceramics of the Chinese" (288)
  10. Make another row, then in the first cell of this row, type or copy the following: "A Japanese force.... .... Hermit Kingdom" (289)
  11. Make a final row, then in the first cell of this row, type of copy the following: "Korea was still recovering ... ... subject to China" (289)
  12. Your chart is now created, and ready to be filled in. Here's how:
  13. For EACH row, complete the important people, terms or ideas discussed in each passage, what the decision about isolation or interaction was made or implied in that passage, and what the impact of that decision was. Remember that impacts can be short term or long term.
  14. When finished, you'll have a complete chart that shows 6 different ways that help answer the question about how decisions about trade or isolation can help or hurt a society. 
Finished? Great! Take a look at this primary source from Japan, and see if the information there changes or confirms your impressions about how Japan treated interaction with other societies and cultures.
