Begin with a review of last night's homework. Do you have any questions?

COMING UP NEXT: Your second essay in answer to the following question --

Where can you see the Six Basic Principles (55-59) at work in the amendment process (60-63), the use of informal amendments (65-67), and the relationships between the states and national government (80-91)? Provide specific examples from the text and from today’s United States events to support your ideas.

One way to organize your response:
Introduction - include broad remarks about what the six basic principles are. End with a thesis statement that names the principles you'll address most heavily in your response.
Body 1 - explain how formal amendments are passed and ratified. Explain clearly which of the six basic principles is/are most apparent in how formal amendments are created.
Body 2 - explain what informal amendments are. Explain clearly which of the six basic principles is/are addressed in the way informal amendments work.
Body 3 - discuss the nature of relationships between the states and the national government, and among the states. Explain clearly which of the six basic principles is/are addressed in the way these relationships work.
Conclusion - Restate or echo your thesis statement. Review or summarize your main points. Finish with a clear and coherent sentence that makes your piece resonate with your reader.

Also: Be sure to cite specific information (quotes, facts, examples) with citations, and include references for all cited material.
Cite your textbook with the author's name and page number in parentheses followed by a period: (McClenaghan 57).
Cite online resources with the author's last name only, or, if the author's name is not available, the first word of the page title, in quotation marks:
(Miller) or ("Sovereignty").

Get started by using Wikipedia as a first step in your research.
  1. Review the information on the "How to use Wikipedia for research" page
  2. Practice the steps there by:
    1. Creating a new Google Doc called "Wikipedia research"
    2. Choosing one of the six basic principles (55-59) to focus on for this activity
    3. Searching Wikipedia for the page by that title
      1. Use the information on the page to review the concept (Write out a few sentences of new information in your Google Doc)
      2. Use the page to collect key words that might be used to help in further searches (Create a list of at least 4 key terms that might be useful)
      3. Use the page to collect links from the References section (Create a list of two or more references that look promising; copy/paste their URLs)
      4. Use the page to collect links from the External links section (Create a list of two or more external links that might help; copy/paste their URLs)
    4. Sharing your Google Doc with Mr. Knowles
  3. Continue using these skills as you work on your essay:
