February 13

Today we'll continue working with the homework from last Thursday, looking at the 5 main concepts introduced in that night's reading.
They are:
  1. A recognition of the fundamental worth of every person
  2. A respect for the equality of all persons
  3. A faith in majority rule accompanied by respect for minority rights
  4. An acceptance of the necessity of compromise
  5. An insistence upon the widest degree of individual freedom
In groups of 3 or 4, you've focused on a single concept to try to really understand it. Take some time to review what you came up with. If you need more time to come up with answers, you'll have about 5-10 minutes. Then you'll be sharing your findings with the class, so be prepared to explain what you came up with to the rest of us.

HOMEWORK: If you finish early, you might want to start tonight's homework (due tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on what class section you are in):
Read the Chapter-in-Brief (page 51) and create an outline of key ideas there. Choose 1 or 2 items from each paragraph to represent what you think the most important ideas are. When finished, you should have a five part outline (one for each section) and 1 to 4 items per section. If you need to look back into the chapter for more information or details, the page numbers are given there. If you have access to a computer outside of class, you might want to create your outline as a Google Doc. See sample below:
