Day 72--

 I will be able to explain how the federal government has acted in the past to make voting in the United States fair for all.I will use information from the textbook to learn about amendments and acts of Congress that have addressed this issue.  I will complete a series of questions from a worksheet, then read about a current case before the Supreme Court that seeks to address the issue.This is a formative assessment; it won't have a direct impact on my course grade, but it will help prepare me for the summative assessment on this unit. 

Last night's homework dealt with voter qualifications in the various states. You learned that each state may have slightly different rules and guidelines for aspects of voting, but for the most part, they are fairly uniform. Citizenship status, residency, and age are the key elements, though registration rules and a few small groups may restrict who may vote in any given election. Literacy tests and poll taxes have been eliminated from voting requirements. 

UPDATE: New rules and state level changes are currently complicating the issue: Read Getting to vote is getting harder to learn about the movement in many states to make voting a little more confusing for many people. An interactive graphic also shows the trends involved. 

Today we'll look at how the federal government has tried to deal with past issues of discrimination in the way states allowed voting to take place. As you read the short passage (138-140) find the answers to the questions in the Chapter 6.3 Suffrage and Civil Rights handout. You'll find it as a READ-ONLY copy, so make a copy you can type in, or get a paper copy if you like. 

If you finish before class ends, you might move on to tonight's assignment, or work on your final written assessment, due May 31st.
If you want to get a head start on your final written assessment for the class, you could tackle the first part using information we've been talking about in class:

Review yesterday's and today's activities and links to think about parties, and your potential role in one. Then write a paragraph that answers these questions:

  Political parties: Do you think you'll join one? Do you already consider yourself aligned with one? If so, why? If not, why not? How did –or will—you choose a party?
