Day 60--

Learning Target ImageWhat will I be able to do when I've finished this lesson? How will I  accomplish this task?  How will I show that I have done this? How well will I have to do this?
I will be able to explain different ways that city governments are organized and how they function.I will work with a partner to complete part of a worksheet that shows different types of city government.  My group will collaborate to complete a worksheet describing all 3 types of government organization. This is a formative assessment and will help me with my summative assessments in this assessment cycle.

Washington is one of 50 states in the country,

and Klickitat is one of 39 counties in the state of Washington,

and White Salmon is one of many cities in Klickitat County.

Because of the way our government works, when you walk down the street in White Salmon, or buy an item in a White Salmon store, your actions are under the "jurisdiction" of multiple layers of government. Your purchase may be taxed in part by the city, and in part by the state. The laws that apply to your actions may be created at the city, county, state, or even federal level. But at the city level of government, many decisions are made to help govern your life.

Today we'll take a look at the way city governments might work, and how they sometimes encounter challenges to make it harder for them to function.

First, you'll be getting into groups today; Ideally, they'll be groups of 6, made up of 3 groups of 2 (we'll see if the numbers in class today let that happen).

Next, once you're in your groups, ONE PERSON in your group should open a Google Document called Chapter 24.4: Cities and Metropolitan Areas and share it with the other members of your group. The whole group will be working on a single document, and each should type their name at the top.

Next, pairs within each group will work together using the book to complete just ONE table in the document, either:
  1. Mayor-Council Form (650-652)
  2. The Commission Form (652-653), or
  3. The Council-Manager Form (653-654)
Use the textbook to review the information on your assigned section, talking with your partner to make sure you complete the chart and understand what you've included for others in your group.

The first pair finished with their chart should turn their attention to the remaining chart in the document, the one dealing with Strong or Weak-Mayor forms of government.

When your group is finished, have one person Share your work in the Daily Work (Formative) Dropbox. When all groups are finished, we'll use the assignments you've just completed to review the material together.

If your group finishes before others, you may want to discuss and review the work you've just completed in your group, or look for/think about topics you might use for your upcoming research assignment, or get started on tonight's homework assignment.
