You had a homework assignment last night which you need to turn in today, but you may want to keep it to help you through the second half of the assignment today. You may not finish this second part today, but please do turn in the assignments before you leave.

To begin, use your textbook to review some of the key concepts you’ve been working with. Work with a partner of your choice to complete the Chapter 1 Review Chart, using the text to help if needed.

As you finish, have them hand in you paper and get a copy of the second handout. Your chart will show from 3 to 5 terms at the top for you to define/find synonyms for, and then a three-column chart to complete after defining the top boxes.

Instructions are written on the handouts, but the basic idea is that you need to work in small groups with others who have the same concept as you to fill out the chart and to be ready to explain it to others (which you'll do tomorrow).  You need to discuss these ideas (some of which are a little complicated/fuzzy) to try to get a good idea of what it’s all about.

The third column seems to be the most confusing for most students. An example for this would be:

  • An insistence on the widest degree of individual freedoms is a great concept....
  • BUT what happens when my freedoms get in the way of your freedoms?
  • When my freedom to play music as loud as I want conflicts with your freedom to get a good night’s sleep.
  • Or when my freedom to drive my car the way I like conflicts with your freedom to cross the street safely.

Think creatively, and do your best.

It's possible you won't finish by the bell, but you already have homework (on the handout you got on Monday) so just make sure you hang on to the sheet and bring it back tomorrow to complete. If you do finish early, you can work on tonight’s homework.

Don’t forget to turn in last night’s homework before you leave.

Get a copy of the unit handout as an online PDF file here.

c.        How did the Framers deal with the issue of slavery in the Constitution? (43-44)
