May 10

Today is the last Advisory meeting*, and you should have EVERYTHING in your portfolio completed.
And some of you have much more to do.
Here's what you should have:
  • High School and Beyond Plan -- You wrote it in English class. You MUST have a copy of it in your portfolio. This is a state graduation requirement. Turn your HSB Plan in to the basket so Mr Knowles can read it and check it off your list.
  • Community Service Hours -- How are you doing? Do you have 30 or more documented, in your portfolio? If not, what are your plans?
  • Student-Led Conference Reflection -- due over a MONTH ago, but there are still many missing
  • Best Work #3 & Reflective Essay-- Due before Spring Break but many are still missing.
  • Senior Project  -- So you passed your presentation? Great. How about the rest of the paperwork -- Time Log with adult/mentor signatures, Mentor paperwork... It should all be done by now. Take it off your list of things to do... turn it in.
  • Best Work #4 & Reflective Essay is due May 10. What's yours going to be? Get it done early if you can, then sit back and relax.
What else?
Our last Advisory deserves a party (or at least cake), and there's Senior Wills, too.
Lots to do in our last time together as an Advisory group.
Make the most of it.

*We actually have one more scheduled, next Friday, but there will be class meetings so you may not have time to complete any of the things above.

Can you believe it? We have only TWO MORE advisory meetings after today. That's not a lot of time left. And some of you have much more to do:
  • High School and Beyond Plan -- You wrote it in English class. You MUST have a copy of it in your portfolio. This is a state graduation requirement. Turn your HSB Plan in to the basket so Mr Knowles can read it and check it off your list.
  • Community Service Hours -- How are you doing? Do you have 30 or more documented, in your portfolio? If not, what are your plans? THIS WEEKEND there's lots of opportunities to pick up hours -- Friday, Silent Auction at Whitson Elementary; Saturday, Community Pride Cleanup in Bingen; Bike park cleanup in White Salmon (by the ball fields behind Thriftway). Let Mr Knowles know if you need contact information.
Sign the Thank You cards for your senior project judges. Get started on your Thank You notes to mentors.
And think about graduation. Will you be a part of it? Get a handout about speeches, music, and other items related to the June 8 Ceremonies.

Not a lot of these days left. And some of you have much more to do:
  • Community Service Hours -- How are you doing? Do you have 30 or more documented, in your portfolio? If not, what are your plans?
  • Student-Led Conference Reflection -- due a MONTH ago, but there are still many missing
  • Best Work #3 -- Due before Spring Break but so many are still missing.
  • Senior Project  -- How ready are you? Have you improved your introduction? Your conclusion? Those two areas were consistently the weakest in the practice presentations. What's your plan?
  • Best Work #4 is due May 10. What's yours going to be? Get it done early if you can, then sit back and relax.

Here we are again. Senior projects are next week and the next, so that will be the focus of much of our discussion, but there's other stuff, too.

Ask for help, use the time wisely, get 'er done!

March 22

Today it's time to review last week's practice presentations, and get ready for the final presentations that will begin soon after we return from Spring Break.

Get a 1/2 page handout with the dates and times available for your presentations, check your calendar, and choose your top 3 choices for dates. The time range is shown for each (April 10 is in the afternoon, the rest are all evenings) but exact time slots will be assigned within the dates you choose. In other words, you don't need to tell me what TIME you want, just which DATE.

Once you've made your choices and presentation times have been assigned, it's very, very hard to change. Judges will be coming from the community, and once they are scheduled, it's very hard to make adjustments. So make your choices after checking sports and work schedules, and other calendars that might have conflicts with the presentation.

After you've made your choices and have turned your choices in, there are many other things to work on during advisory:
  • Community Service Hours -- How are you doing? Do you have 30 or more documented, in your portfolio?
  • Student-Led Conference Reflection -- due a few weeks ago, but there are still many missing
  • Best Work #3 -- Due in this week (we won't meet as a group next Friday, and it's due by Spring Break, so do it today); get it done!
  • Senior Project  -- review you scoring rubric from Mr Knowles, work on fine tuning, get ready.
ALSO: A survey/question from the Yearbook, and odds and ends to be handed out.

On your assigned day, come to room 9A (Mrs. Callow's room) by 8:15. You'll present, and have a chance to watch and score the other students in the same session. Be sure to come with all materials you'll need, and come dressed for success (business attire). If you have any special technical needs (anything beyond a computer and projector) let Mr Knowles know now.

March 1

posted Mar 1, 2013, 5:34 AM by Peter Knowles

It's Friday again, and that means Advisory.

And it's also March (already) and that means Senior Project presentations are just around the corner.
Practice presentations will take place on March 12, 13, and 14, between 8:15 and 10:45 (while sophomores and other students are taking their state tests).
So on TWO of those days, you will not have to come to school until 10:30 or so. And on the OTHER day, you'll need to be here at the regular time to make your practice presentation. If you already know of a day in that date range that you cannot make your presentation, EMAIL MR. KNOWLES to let him know before he makes up the schedule. You'll find out next week which date you have assigned.

What to expect:
Practice presentations should be as complete, professional, and polished as your final presentation that you'll make in April. (They often aren't, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try for it. That's why we call it a practice).
Students should consult the presentation rubric to see what they should have and do to earn the best score possible. You'll find the rubric on pages 23 & 24 of the Senior Project Handbook

Also:
Bring your Senior Project hours form to 5th and 7th period next week until you have been checked off by Mr Knowles (he'll come to your classroom, so have it with you to make things go smoothly).

FINALLY-- if you haven't turned in your conference reflection essay yet, you're behind schedule on Advisory assignments. And keep looking for that third (or fourth) best work to turn in.
